In a study by Dr. Gail Matthews of Dominican University of California, it was reported that:
People who write down their goals, make themselves accountable by sharing them with someone else, and commit to regular updates on their progress are 33% more successful in achieving their goals.
Don’t you want to be 33% more successful in achieving YOUR goals?
Basically, this study says three things:
- Write them down
- Be accountable
- Commit to them
These are three valuable tools in the coaching process.
Let’s chunk it down a little further. Writing them down is the first step. There are many ways to get creative and fun with this. A few of my favorites are:
- Affirmations – write your goals in the form of affirmations, as if you have already achieved them, and repeat them daily. (I like to say mine in the shower)
- Vision Board – not everyone likes words. Some people are much more visual. They like to introduce pictures and color to their goals. A vision board is a fabulous way to illustrate your goals. I use a variation of this, and create vision pages in my journal. I stick pictures on, doodle and draw and basically let it evolve.
- Goal cards – write your goals (or your affirmations even) onto business card sized pages and pop them in your wallet, so you see them every time you open it. Or, alternatively, place them beside your bed and review them last thing at night or first thing in the morning.
Step two is to be accountable. By saying your goals out loud to another person, you are giving them life, making them real, and making yourself more accountable to achieving them. Tell a supportive friend, or find an accountability partner or coach and start making things happen.
Finally, commit to them. This one goes hand in hand with accountability. Once you have engaged in the accountability process, commit to it. Set yourself weekly or monthly tasks to achieve in relation to these goals and commit to making them happen with your accountability partner or coach.
